What are Hayfever and Rhinitis?
Hayfever and Rhinitis
Hayfever
Hayfever is a condition of irritation of nose, eyes, throat and airways. This is usually caused by an inhaled substance. The offending substance is usually a pollen (pollen allergy). It occurs seasonally when the offending pollen is released into the air by its plant or tree. It is usually an allergy, but some pollens such as that of oilseed rape are irritant in their own right without causing allergy, although allergy to that may also be present.
Perennial Rhinitis
Perennial rhinitis occurs at any time through out the year and may be related to food intolerances or food allergies. It may be caused by house dust mite, environmental pollutants and other inhaled substances. ACE inhibitor drugs used for high blood pressure can cause perennial rhinitis in up to 30% of users.
Hayfever and Rhinitis Symptoms
The symptoms of hay fever and rhinitis include runny eyes, blocked ears, thick mucus discharge from nose, chronic irritating cough and sneezing.

Hayfever and Rhinitis Treatment
Medication
Antihistamines such as chlorpheniramine (piriton) and loratadine (claritin) are commonly used. They all have potential side effects and are often sedative. Steroid sprays may be used. These include mometasone(nasonex), triamcinolone (nasacort) and budesonide (rhinocort). These all only suppress the condition. They do not cure it.
Newer treatment includes leukotriene receptor anatagonists such as monteleukast (singulair) and a long acting hayfever injection such as kenalog may be used to suppress the symptoms for the season
Hayfever and Rhinitis Selfhelp
Avoidance of the offending substance will be very helpful. This does beg the question of identifying that thing and that is often a difficult problem. Helpful information is available from AllergyUK. (I'm Joint President of AllergyUK - ed).
