What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms and Causes
Rheumatoid Arthritis, strictly speaking is one of a number of types of inflammatory arthritis. Each is characterised by inflammation of a joint or joints where there is redness, pain, stiffness, swelling and warmth, and then after time there may be disability of the affected joints where they remain swollen and may fuse together. It may present as back pain and/or scoliosis.
Types of Inflammatory Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis
In Rheumatoid Arthritis many joints tend to be affected and the course is progressive with periods of quietness and others of worsening.
Gout
Gout by contrast presents typically with just one joint affected, classically a big toe joint. The condition is very acute and extremely painful. Gout is however relatively short lived with complete improvement between attacks.
Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing Spondylitis is a progressive inflammation of the soft tissues (non bony parts), usually in the spine, but it may affect other organs as well. When the inflammation dies down bone is laid down where the ligaments and tendons used to be and the bones become fused together and not able to move. It is a cause of back pain.
Psoriatic Arthritis
Psoriatic Arthritis may be difficult to differentiate from Rheumatoid Arthritis but its association with psoriasis and different blood test results are indicators.
