What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia Symptoms and Causes
Fibromyalgia is a muscular pain syndrome that affects the soft tissues (muscles, ligaments and tendons). Fibromyalgia symptoms include generalized muscle pain and back pain, fatigue, and specific tender points on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms and/or legs. In addition to these tender points, fibromyalgia is often accompanied by non-restorative sleep, stiff joints in the morning, headache, depression, and tingling or numbness in the hands and feet.
While typically occurring in relatively healthy, middle-aged women, fibromyalgia may also occur within women of all ages, as well as men and children. There is no known anatomical cause for fibromyalgia, which is very common yet difficult to fully understand.
Symptoms of fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) are very similar, and the two conditions may be confused.
Introduction provided by Spine-health: For additional information on these conditions, visit their health centers on fibromyalgia, chronic pain.

Fibromyalgia Treatment
Medication
Given the widespread pain, overwhelming fatigue and other chronic affects that fibromyalgia may have on patients, treatment is especially important. Lyrica, Cymbalta and Savella are some medications that are specifically tailored for treating fibromyalgia. Other types of medications that may be used to treat fibromyalgia include:-
- NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like Ibuprofen (e.g. Advil, Motrin, Nuprin) and Naproxen (e.g. Aleve, Naprosyn, Anaprox, Naprelan).
- Non-narcotic pain medications like Paracetamol/Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
- Tricyclic anti-depressants like Amitriptyline (Elavil), Nortriptyline (Pamelor), or Doxepin (Sinequan)
- Muscle relaxants like Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) or Orphenadrine Citrate (Norflex)
- Sedatives/hypnotics like Temazepan (Restoril), Flurazepan (Dalmane) and Triazolam (Halcion)
- Corticosteroids such as prednisolone
Fibromyalgia may also be treated by massage, lidocaine injections into tender points, low-impact aerobic conditioning, nerve stimulation, ice/heat therapy, laser therapy, and hypnosis.
