What is Reiki?
Reiki was developed in Japan about 100 years ago. Rei-ki means "universal energy" and treatment is related to the flow of that energy around the body. In this respect the basis of the therapy is akin to that of acupuncture and yoga. That is, that in illness or injury the flow is in some way disordered and needs to be made normal. The techniques used to regularise that flow differ from discipline to discipline.
In Reiki there is a series of hand positions, either above or gently touching the body which the practitioner uses to direct the universal energy into the patient. The full treatment may take an hour or so with each position held for a few minutes. The body's healing power will ensure that the appropriate amount of energy is then channelled into the patient without any conscious effort on the part of the patient or therapist. It may be undetected or felt as some physical sensation like heat cold or tingling.
Reiki doesn't fall neatly into one of our pragmatic categories for natural remedies, for details about how we classify them and the lists see the natural remedies home page .
