What is Autism?
Autism Symptoms
Autism spectrum disorders are a group of disorders which vary from the relatively less serious Aspergers syndrome through to Classical Autism.
The main autism symptoms are:-
- problems with communication both verbal and non-verbal
- abnormal social interactions
- unusual, limited or repetitive behaviours and interests
Parents are usually the first to notice that their child is "not normal". The child may not respond to the parents in the usual way by showing a blank face instead of smiling, be obsessively interested in one thing, seem unable to play, develop rocking habits and are not able to behave in an appropriate way.
Diagnosis may be difficult, especially in the milder cases or aspergers and relies on a multidisciplinary approach and the finding the presence of certain behaviours essentially as detailed above.
Aspergers Syndrome
Aspergers Syndrome is especially difficult to diagnose and treat as the affected person is likely to function relatively normally and lead a normal life, but may be considered "odd" and have relationship difficulties as a result.
